04 Sep 2023

Under the leadership of our Ministry and with the patronage of Mrs. Emine Erdoğan, the Zero Waste Movement aims to avoid waste, prevent, reduce, reuse, and recycle waste.

The Zero Waste Movement, which promotes sustainable production and consumption habits and supports the efficient use of resources, also helps achieve positive socio-economic outcomes, including the development of social solidarity. The work done within this framework includes:

- Since June 2017, the number of buildings/complexes that have adopted the zero waste management system has reached approximately 166,000.

- Around 19.2 million people have been trained on zero waste.

- The recycling rate, which was 13% in 2017, increased to 27.2% in 2021 and to 30.13% in 2022.

- The goal is to increase the recycling rate to 35% in 2023 and to 60% by 2035.

- Since the start of the project, a total of approximately 45.5 million tons of recyclable waste has been processed by licensed businesses, including 25.4 million tons of paper and cardboard, 6.6 million tons of plastic, 2.6 million tons of glass, 0.7 million tons of metal, and 10.2 million tons of organic and other recyclable waste.

- From the collected waste, an economic gain of 96 billion TL has been achieved, along with savings of 703 million kWh of energy, 711 million m³ of water, 82 million m³ of landfill space, preventing the emission of 4.9 million tons of greenhouse gases, saving 432 million trees, and conserving 108 million barrels of oil.

The Zero Waste Movement, which has opened the door to a significant and rapid transformation in waste management in our country, has also attracted international attention. In this regard, the movement has been actively promoted on both national and international platforms by its advocate, Mrs. Emine Erdoğan, who has called on other countries at every opportunity.

The fact that our country will lead the transformation of the Zero Waste Movement into a global awareness is significant for both our country, which has made important strides in establishing the Zero Waste System, and for the world, which is facing a tough challenge in combating climate change.
