Emine Erdoğan and United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the "Memorial Corner" established at the UN building to honor those who lost their lives and those affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, on February 6.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's wife, Emine Erdoğan, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres signed the condolence book at the Memorial Corner. Guterres wrote in the book: "I would like to extend my condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. My heart is with the people in the affected region. I will never forget personally witnessing the tremendous generosity of the Turkish people in Gaziantep as they embraced, sheltered, and assisted millions of Syrian refugees. Today, we must show the same solidarity with the Turkish people at this critical time. The UN stands in full solidarity with the Turkish government and people, ready to provide all necessary support."

Emine Erdoğan shared these words:

"From the very first moments of the earthquake, our state has been united, mobilizing all resources and means to provide aid in the region. Every piece of support mobilized to heal the wounds caused by what we describe as the disaster of the century serves as a balm to our wounds. This powerful solidarity that has emerged from all corners of the world reminds us all that pain knows no borders, that tears are the same regardless of religion, language, race, or geography. The friends who have stood by Türkiye by sending search and rescue teams, providing humanitarian aid, and sharing prayers and well wishes have been a source of great comfort for us and our people. I wholeheartedly believe that, as the human family, we can overcome countless hardships when we stand united like the fingers of a single hand. I hope that this spirit of unity and solidarity that appears in difficult times will also persist in good times, as I firmly believe that only in such a world can peace and tranquility be truly established."

After the pair placed red carnations at the "Memorial Corner," Erdoğan showed Guterres that the clock on the piece was set to "4:17," the exact time when the earthquake struck on February 6.

Guterres and Erdoğan also toured the Zero Waste Digital Exhibition, which was opened at the UN building in honor of International Zero Waste Day on March 30.

Erdoğan, Guterres, and their accompanying delegation were briefed by Sadiye Bilgiç, Director at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, on Turkey's significant steps and initiatives under the zero waste movement, led by Emine Erdoğan since 2017.
